How To Achieve A Good Health For Life

We all know there is nothing as unpleasant as feeling sick and miserable. You can only enjoy your life to the fullest when you feel your best. Having a healthy mind and body means you’re able to accomplish more in your day, and you’ll feel better doing it. It’s as easy as a few simple lifestyle changes. To achieve great health for life, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle which includes a nutritious diet, plenty of exercise, work-life balance and enough sleep.

Diet:

health-for-lifeThe benefits of a healthy diet are easy to appreciate: the lasting energy from good meals gives you the stamina to keep going all through the day, and your well-fueled body will glow with vitality, increasing your self-esteem and body image. So how healthy is your diet? One way to know is to weigh it up against the classic food pyramid. You should be eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables everyday (one portion being a cup) and your portions of meat and fish should not be larger or thicker than the palm of your hand. Whole grains are considered a healthy base to your diet, but refined starches like pasta, white rice and white bread contain very few nutrients and should be eaten with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Sugary sweets and unhealthy fats like butter and sunflower oil should be limited in your diet, but fish oils and olive oil are among the healthy fats you can consume freely. Another way to weigh up your diet is by calculating your BMI (body mass index), which indicates how overweight or underweight you are. Although this does not directly indicate how healthy your diet is, it can give clues about whether your intake of energy is too high or too low for your body’s needs. Finally, if you’re unsure about the quality of your diet, it may be a good idea to book an appointment with a dietitian for professional advice on how to eat a healthy diet that will help you to maintain youthful vigor and health for life.

Exercise:

health-for-lifeWithout enough exercise, your body becomes weak and you can feel breathless even after the simplest tasks. Even worse, a lack of exercise is a massive risk factor for many deadly diseases, especially heart disease. When you get enough exercise, you get higher energy levels, feel better about yourself, and are less likely to feel depressed or anxious about your health. The minimum recommended amount of exercise you need to be healthy is twenty minutes, three or four times a week. This exercise can consist of cardiovascular exercise (exercise that increases endurance and fitness) like running, cycling and swimming, resistance training like weightlifting, or even flexibility training such as yoga or pilates. Generally, it is a good idea to engage in many different types of exercise to increase your fitness on different levels. This is called cross-training, and results in less injuries and use of many different muscle groups. It is important to continue exercising even into old age, in order to maintain the benefits of exercise for your health for life, but as aging decreases your capacity to exercise, you may wish to do gentler activities like walking and water aerobics.

Work-life balance:

health-for-lifeHealth includes both your mind and body, and if you’re feeling stressed, not having enough time for yourself and too busy all the time, this has a big impact on your health. Stress is a risk factor for illnesses of the mind, like depression, and of the body, such as high blood pressure. It is important to evaluate if you are taking on too much, and if it is impacting negatively on your life. If you need to, cut back on your work responsibilities. Spend time with people whose company you enjoy. Cultivate a hobby that lets you relax. When you take time for yourself, you can reflect on the things that are important to you and recharge your mind. It can help you to discover and evaluate your priorities and how well you are coping with life, and can help you to make the changes you need to enjoy health for life.

Sleep:

health-for-lifeEver woken up after a measly four hours of sleep feeling grumpy, tired, and world-weary? Studies have shown that too little sleep can activate chemicals in your cells that increase your risk of cancer and many other diseases. It is recommended that you sleep seven or eight hours a night to be healthy. Less, or more, can be unhealthy and may make you feel irritable and tired during the day. If you are struggling with sleep, you may need light-blocking curtains, earplugs, and a ban on electronics after 21:00 to help you drift off peacefully. Having enough sleep not only makes you feel calm and healthy, but it will improve your social life and relationships as you will be more good-humored and patient.
